One of the most exciting electronic artists emanating from these shores right now, Baobei, returns to the forefront with a brand new music video for her single "Sync / Cheap Talk".
The London-based, British-Chinese DJ, producer and songwriter looks set to continue to garner significant attention with "Sync / Cheap Talk"—a scintillating, genre-bending, double-track release spanning elements of pop, bass and dubstep. Released via Hotpot Records, the record has also recently received two new edits from Baobei—a more up-beat "spicy margarita" edit for "Sync" and a quicker, two-step "espresso martini" version for "Cheap Talk”—highlighting the young artist's versatility in crafting some of the most forward-thinking music emanating from the pop/ dance landscape. Now, Baobei delivers a sleek, playful and charismatic video rooted in nostalgia and 90s kitsch, with references from brick
phones to analogue VHS TV systems. The video sees Baobei led on by a ‘major label A&R’ type, making an outspoken point about the music industry and its notorious ‘Cheap Talk’, leading onto the birth of Baobei’s exciting popstar persona in the second half of the video.
Speaking on the release, Baobei, states: "A love song for the dancefloor, 'Sync' is a bassy house anthem that fuses intimate moments with heavy driving energy - asking if you and your lover can sync as one. 'Cheap Talk' calls out those who talk the talk but don't walk the walk in a pop-infused dubstep with drops that hit harder than empty words ever will."
With thousands of streams under her belt and a strong, rapidly growing cult following since her inception, the young talent has racked up key radio support from BBC RADIO 1, with spins coming from Sian, Sarah and Jaguar, a BBC Intro Mini Mix, BBC 1XTRA support from Casskidd and KISS plays from Shosh. Add to this tour support for the likes of Sammy Virji and SG Lewis, headline shows at tastemaker London spots MOT and Colour Factory, the critical acclaim from the likes of CLASH and TIMEOUT seem on-point with Spotify playlist support from New Music Friday UK, Fresh Finds UK & Ireland and planet rave.
Meaning "darling" or "treasure" in Mandarin, Baobei is Lila Yin's musical alter-ego, an avatar in a dreamworld of her own design. Blending elements of next gen UKG and drum and bass with pure pop sensibilities, Bagels music explores dualities; the organic and the digital, the strong and divine feminine, a girl online and a body in the dance. Inspired by collectives who uplift marginal voices in electronic music, Baobei's mission is to build a boundless club space where ravers of all backgrounds can find free expression and connection.
With more music on the horizon and further exciting announcements in the pipeline, it's clear Baobei is setting pace as one of the year's most innovative and confident new voices in the dance space. Successfully bridging a slew of genres into innovative music heralds something genuinely exciting for a young artist continuing to make notable waves. A serious one to watch for 2025 and beyond.
