Paul Russell links with Saweetie for New Jack Swing single ‘That Girl’

Platinum rapper, singer, and songwriter Paul Russell teams with  Saweetie for the new single “That Girl,” a pitch-perfect tribute to ’90s new jack swing out now via Arista Records. The funky, flirty, and irresistibly fun track also comes with a playful music video that finds the dynamic duo orchestrating a brazen heist in a buzzing art gallery.

Mixing candy-sweet melody with unabashed swagger, “That Girl” is for the cookouts wherever it’s hot, and living-room two-stepping wherever it’s not. Produced by frequent Paul collaborator Sean Cook (Shaboozey, DUCKWRTH) alongside Jeff Gitty (J. Cole, Anderson .Paak), the upbeat cut faithfully recreates the beloved ’90s sound down to the rowdy gang vocals, super smooth harmonies, turntable cuts, and ratatat TR-808 snares. Paul glides over track, laying down gleeful lines like, “It’s criminal that girl is so fine / I’m cuffing you tonight, you all mine.” Saweetie then struts across her bars, sliding in a Mint Condition reference for good measure.

Paul shared some words in honor of the release: “Long ago there was a simpler time, when the jeans were baggier, the songs were lovey-er and people actually danced at the club. Saweetie and I think the world needs a bit of that right now so we’re bringing it back: Welcome to the ’90s. I love this song because it makes me want to move and I think it’s gonna do the same for you.”

Saweetie shared her enthusiasm too: “Me and Paul were supposed to collaborate for some time and we finally found the perfect record! When I heard ‘That Girl,’ I knew I had to be on it. It’s got a nostalgic summertime vibe that makes you want to have fun. It’s something for my icy girls to listen to when they want to tap into their confidence. Always remember: you’re that girl!”

The “That Girl” music video finds the pair at an art show, taking in the scene. Before long, though, Saweetie uses her feminine wiles to distract the crowd, essentially becoming a living work of art while Paul walks around taking whatever he wants — vases, paintings, cocktails. The plot thickens when a security camera comes into play. Find out what happens HERE.

The slick new single follows Paul’s March appearance on the globetrotting soul-pop confection Confessions with Flo Rida and K-pop group ENHYPEN. Before that came his 2024 debut EP, again sometime?, which included hits like “Slippin’ featuring Meghan Trainor and the song that started it all, Lil Boo Thang.” The latter hit #14 on the Hot 100, racked up 776 million streams and counting, and made Barack Obama’s 2024 summer playlist, among other major wins. Meanwhile, EP highlight Say Cheese was named one of the Best Hip-Hop Songs of the Year by HipHopDX and Eat Pray Love got a sunny remix from Free Nationals.

Along the way, Paul has brought his undeniable charisma to performances across the globe, including stops at the White House and on American Idol, embarking on his first European run in support of Teddy Swims, and hitting North American arenas on Trainor’s Timeless Tour. “That Girl” is the sound of Paul Russell warming up as he enters his exciting next chapter.
