Top or Chop? A Recap from One of the Biggest Nights in Fashion: The Met Gala 2025
7th May 2025
By Bethan Dadson
The 2025 Met Gala brought the drama, the dandyism, and the undeniable style with its theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Honoring the legacy of Black dandy culture, the night was a celebration of exquisite tailoring, bold silhouettes, and sartorial storytelling. But did everyone understand the assignment? Let’s break down the hits and misses in this year’s Top or Chop.
Rihanna - TOP
Rihanna wearing custom Marc Jacobs.
Kicking things off with the Queen of Fashion herself – Rihanna, styled in custom Marc Jacobs. A look that doubled as a pregnancy announcement, flawlessly balancing masculine and feminine elements. Elegant yet iconic – chef’s kiss!
Louis Patridge - CHOP
Louis Partridge wearing Prada.
This is giving 1920s fancy dress party, and not in a good way. The suit is ill-fitting and completely misses the theme. Also... has anyone heard of a steamer? Welcome back Ryan Evans!
Teyana Taylor - TOP
Teyana Taylor wearing Ruth E. Carter.
Teyana Taylor. Wow. Best dressed hands down – and honestly, one of the most stunning Met Gala looks of all time. This is dandyism at its finest.
Amelia Gray - CHOP
Amelia Gray wearing custom Valentino.
The whole look feels disjointed and almost like a caricature of the theme. The red is too bright, and the black bow is way too harsh. A tailored suit or skirt would have elevated this... but alas.
Regé-Jean Page & Cole Escola - CHOP
Regé-Jean Page wearing Brioni, Tiffany & Co. and Tag Heuer.
Cole Escola wearing Christopher John Rogers.
Both of these could have been saved if different colours or patterns were chosen. At least it wasn’t just another boring black suit!
Laura Herrier, Jodie Smith-Turner and Doechii - TOP
Laura Herrier wearing Gap Studio.
Jodie Smith-Turner wearing custom Burberry.
Doechii wearing Louis Vuitton.
Some of the night’s most iconic looks right here. The tailoring is impeccable, the silhouettes are stunning, and they stayed true to their personal style. LOVE!
Sydney Sweeny, Maya Hawke, Lorde, Joe Burrow, Lala Anthony, Venus Williams - CHOP
Sydney Sweeny wearing Miu Miu.
Maya Hawke wearing Prada.
Lorde wearing custom Thom Browne.
Joe Burrow wearing Gucci.
Lala Anthony wearing Off-White by the late designer Virgil Abloh.
Venus Williams wearing Lacoste.
These are some of our least fave looks of the night. We get the sentiment (kinda), but the execution missed the mark. Outside of a themed Met Gala, they wouldn’t be so bad.
Lauryn Hill - TOP
Lauryn Hill wearing Jude Dontoh.
Now THIS is how you make a Met Gala debut! Ms. Lauryn Hill shut it down in custom ... The colour is EVERYTHING.
Hailey Bieber - CHOP; Kendall Jenner - TOP
Hailey Bieber wearing Saint Laurent.
For the Met, this is pretty underwhelming. If the tailoring was stronger, it might have worked – but just a blazer and heels? Not enough to land on the best-dressed list.
Kendall Jenner wearing Torishéju Dumi.
Obsessed with the fishtail skirt and structured shoulders. The tailoring is impeccable, and the fit is super flattering. In awe!
Sha’Carri Richardson & Natasha Lyonne - CHOP
Sha’Carri Richardson wearing Valentino’s Alessandro Michele.
Natasha Lyonne wearing Alexander McQueen.
Nothing tailored about these looks at all. The fabric and colours aren’t doing them any favours. A suit would have been a way stronger choice – they would have ate in that!
Khaby Lame, Keith Powers, Alton Mason, Willy Chavarria, Lakeith Stanfield, Colman Domingo - TOP
Khaby Lame wearing custom BOSS.
Keith Powers wearing BOSS.
Alton Mason wearing BOSS.
Willy Chavarria wearing Willy Chavarria.
LaKeith Stanfield wearing Ferragamo.
Colman Domingo wearing Valentino.
We LOVE when men break away from boring suits, and these guys absolutely delivered. Some of the best male looks of the night – tailored to perfection. Chef’s kiss.
Cardi B & Jamie Singer Soros - TOP
Cardi B wearing Burberry.
Jamie Singer Soros wearing Sergio Hudson.
Absolutely adore a monochrome moment. Cardi B and Jamie Singer Soros nailed it. The detailing is crazy good, and the tailoring? Immaculate!
Sabrina Carpenter - CHOP; Jenna Ortega - TOP
Sabrina Carpenter wearing Louis Vuitton.
This could have been a fan favourite with just a little more on the bottom half. Even stockings would’ve done the trick. The top half is beautiful but not enough to hit best-dressed status.
Jenna Ortega wearing Balmain.
Wearing RULERS as a DRESS for a theme centered around TAILORING? Oh, she is taking it! Such a unique take – obsessed!
Imaan Hammam, Doja Cat, Ayo Edibiri & Zendaya - TOP
Imaan Hammam wearing Magda Butrym.
Doja Cat wearing Marc Jacobs.
Ayo Edibiri wearing Maximilian Davis.
Zendaya wearing custom Louis Vuitton.
More stunning showstoppers of the night – these looks are everything.
Janelle Monae & Ugbad Abdi - TOP
Janelle Monae wearing Thom Browne.
Ugbad Abdi wearing Michael Kors.
Last but certainly not least we have Janelle Monae and Ugbad Abdi embodying dandyism in its purest form. We love obnoxious coats, and Janelle’s look reveal was everything!
